The George Hotel was built in the 16th century and believed to have originally been the Dower House to Wallingford Castle, the remains of which can still be seen in the beautiful gardens to the rear of the hotel.
In 1517 Geoffrey & Elizabeth Baynton established The George & Dragon here and so became the first owners of what was to become a busy coaching Inn. Since then The George has welcomed many travellers and guests. Not least, by name, was the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin who occupied a room above the Courtyard from which he would escape the law, via a trap door in the floor. Many of the rooms still exhibit their original features. Among these is the haunted Teardrop Room, with its strange and interesting story and symbols on the wall. Under the ownership of Peel Hotels, the hotel has undergone continuous upgrading and modernisation of the building and its facilities to provide its guests with the very best in charming, characterfull surroundings. Over the years the hotel has been extended and modernised to provide every modern facility in 39 bedrooms ranging from Single rooms with bathroom to a large Family room. All rooms have complimentary Tea/Coffee making facilities, hair dryer and trouser press. Many have the addition of a safe and ironing centre. Free Wireless Broadband Internet is in every room and throughout the public areas and meeting rooms of the hotel. A free Internet kiosk is available to all guests. All public areas and meeting rooms are located on Ground Floor with easy level access from our Free Car park at the rear of the hotel. Rooms lead onto the heated central courtyard with its tables and parasols providing a popular oasis for relaxing and socialising The Tavern Bar with its ancient oak beams and log fire makes a cosy respite at the end of a hard day. Wealhs Bistro is in the older original part of the hotel with low beamed ceiling giving it a charm all of its own. Our main function suite, the Sir John Hedges Rooms, accommodating up to 150 persons, has been redecorated and upgraded in the past year. Wide access doors allow entry of anything as large as a car, making this ideal for product launches. The Private Drawing Room and Wealh’s Room are perfect for smaller meetings, conferences and other events of up to 60 persons.
