Hidden away in a backstreet at the heart of Manchester, is a basement restaurant which has been one of the cities best kept secrets since 1982.

The '39 Steps' has become a culinary institution where many a legal case has been discussed, properties exchanged and friendships forged. Professionals, entrepreneurs and famous faces have mixed discreetly here for years. Fresh faces Sonia & Eugene (daughter/ manager and son-in law, head chef) and their team, have continued to build upon John's original success with fresh flavours from South African head chef Eugene (e.g Venison flavoured with Juniper) and a fresh restaurant refurbishment. The earthy yellow bistro feel has been replaced by a simple cream, brown and raspberry stylish interior guided by John's sister, interior designer Marie Mellor. However regulars will be reassured that they have retained their friendly atmosphere, characteristic blackboard and classics such as Tasmanian Fishcakes, Steak Diane & Sticky Toffee Pudding.
